Living In Joy

When we live in joy which is our true nature, we tend to:

1. Forgive quickly ~ Holding onto the past steals the joy from the present which is all we actually have and has detrimental effects on our well-being (not theirs), including increased depression, anxiety, and stress. Why let someone else have power over us? By holding onto perceived past resentment, we literally create energetic chords to that person, or events which drain our own energy. When we choose love over hatred, these chords are dissolved. "To understand everything is to forgive everything." ~Buddha

2. Treat everyone with kindness (including ourselves) ~ in Buddhism they say to treat everyone as though they are your Mother believing that we could have been her in a previous lifetime.  Each time we perform a random selfless act of kindness, our brain produces serotonin, a hormone that eases tension and lifts our spirits. And, by treating people (including ourselves) with love, dignity, and respect allows us to build stronger relationships. "When you judge someone, you have no time to love them." ~Mother Teresa

3. Practice gratitude ~ instead of lowering our vibration and attracting more negative circumstances by complaining about something, whether that be the unseasonal, or even seasonal weather, or our latest ailment; focus on all the positive things that you have in your life, watch how they magnify when you think and talk about them and how good you feel. Gratitude is a fantastic way of dissolving any negative emotions and a great way to start and finish a day. "If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, "thank you," that would suffice."  ~Meister Eckhart

4. Get completely absorbed in the present ~ whatever you are doing enjoy it, or go and do something that you do feel passionate about. Spend time in nature. Why waste a single minute worrying about a future which might never happen, or a past which no longer exists anyway? All we ever have is this precious moment. "Fear can keep us up all night long, but faith makes one fine pillow."  ~Philip Gulley

5. Surround ourselves with optimistic people ~ the more positive and like-minded people we have around us to encourage us to achieve our dreams, the better we will feel about ourselves. “I always felt that the great high privilege, relief and comfort of friendship was that one had to explain nothing."~Katherine Mansfield

6. Follow our hearts ~ we are not here to live someone else's dream, and only martyr ourselves when we try to please everyone. Listen to what people have to say, but never seek anyone's approval but your own. It is you that has to live with your decisions, not them. "It's impossible, said pride. "It's risky, said experience. "It's pointless, said reason. "Give it a try," whispered the heart."

7. Meditate ~ the health and well-being benefits are far-reaching. 'Harvard researchers asked a control group to start practising relaxation methods every day, after two months, their bodies began to change: the genes that help fight inflammation, kill diseased cells and protect the body from cancer all began to switch on.' Start out just spending a few minutes a day sitting upright in a quiet room with your eyes shut and focus on your breath, or saying a simple mantra to yourself, such as "Aum" which causes a perfect balance and an equilibrium in the energy exchange between you and the "outside world." With regular practice, you could increase this to 10 and then 20 minutes, depending on how much time you have. There are plenty of guided meditations available too.  It silences your mind and helps you find peace.  “Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

8. Say less and listen more ~ when you're with people, spend more time intensely listening than talking and look into their eyes, so you can hear what their heart is saying and respond more compassionately. "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." ~ Epictetus

9. Clear the clutterIt releases the stuck energy in your home, which in turn makes you feel lighter in body, mind and spirit. It helps you to clear out old, stuck feelings and emotions, negative past-history events and traumas, leaving you free to move on in your life with energy, enthusiasm and motivation.  Some studies have concluded that Europeans are a lot happier than Americans are, which is interesting because they live in smaller homes, drive simpler cars, and own fewer items. "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." ~ William Morris

10. Eat well and exercise ~ we really are what we eat. Everything we eat directly impacts our body's ability to produce hormones, which dictate our moods, energy and mental focus. Nourish your body with whole and organic foods (where possible) that keep your body and mind in good shape. Exercise releases happy hormones called endorphins which also happen to be the most commonly known theoretical way of releasing your natural pain-fighters. Find a way of exercising that you enjoy, so you will keep it up without it becoming a chore. "Life is not merely being alive, but being well." ~ Marcus Valerius Martialis
